Narratives of Help and Healing
Hear from the brave patients who have found hope and healing at Barrow while battling the most debilitating neurological conditions.

“I had the DBS surgery with Dr. Smith and it completely changed my life. I very rarely have seizures now and can spend time with my husband, play with my children, travel, and do all the things I love without fear or medication side effects.”
-Sara Eeds, Epilepsy Patient

“Interning at the same institution that saved my life felt like a full-circle moment. It gave me such a sense of purpose knowing that I was researching solutions and contributing to treatments for future patients with the same condition that I had.”
– Gia Patel

“When we came across Barrow’s team, I felt for the first time somebody cared about Nate as a person and not just a patient,” Sherry says. “We finally found somebody who cared and was willing to help us.”

“I remember asking Dr. Snyder why she liked being a spine surgeon, and she told me that she liked seeing people get their lives back. I can proudly say that I’ve done that to the fullest,” he says.

“Our whole family could not be more grateful to Dr. Lawton. Not only for saving Kris’s life, but also for preserving something he holds so dear,” says Renelle. “It’s scary to think what the outcome could have been if the AVM had ruptured before we got to Barrow since there weren’t any surgeons near us who could handle it.”

“Dr. Spetzler not only saved my life, but he also gave me back everything I loved. Because of him, I could return to teaching art, continue painting, enjoy reading novels, and travel with my husband. I will always be grateful for that.”

“Thanks to Barrow, I’m still here, I’m still me, and I still have a lot to look forward to in life. I could not be more grateful for that opportunity.”
– Terry Rice, Stroke Survivor

“I no longer put off planning for the future because I know I have a long, bright one ahead of me. I have Dr. Lawton and everyone at Barrow who cared for me to thank for that.”
– Joey Jean Farmer

“My recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. At one point, I thought I wouldn’t be able to move anything past my neck. Now, not only can I sign again, but I can also hug my children and play with my grandchildren again.”
-Arturo Monroy, Neuro-Rehabilitation

“I have hope now. Not just for myself, but for my children, grandchildren, and everyone else who may one day receive a Parkinson’s diagnosis.”
